The Curse Of Summer Holiday

Even if a president can avoid vacation blunders, at times it seems as if their time away is cursed. President Barack Obama had a string of vacations interrupted by crises including a terrorist attempt to blow up an airplane bound for Detroit and having to cut a vacation short to negotiate a budget agreement with lawmakers.

The curse of Summer Holiday

Summer vacation has come and Velma, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo meet up with Fred and Daphne so they can go to meet Daphne's uncle, Thornton "Thorny" Blake V, who has given them summer jobs at his country club in Erie Point in order to pay back damages from a prior mystery. The night of the club's opening party, a huge frog-like monster suddenly appears and wreaks havoc. The gang decides to investigate the only person who has ever taken a picture of the lake monster, a lighthouse keeper named Elmer Uggins. He then tells them the story of the lake monster: when people were first settling in Erie Point, a witch named Wanda Grubwort warned them not to come onto her land. They paid no attention to her, so she used her magic staff - which used moonstones as the source of her power - to turn a frog into a horrible monster that attacked the villagers. Wanda was later tried for her crimes and burnt at the stake.

2. Health scientists did some mythbusting this summer, pointing out that some foods and vitamins aren't all they're made out to be. A large clinical study showed vitamin D supplements aren't associated with reducing the risk of bone fractures, and a Harvard scientist caused some controversy by calling coconut oil "Pure Poison".

3. In July we found ourselves waiting with bated breath for the opening of a mysterious black sarcophagus found in Alexandria, Egypt. At one point it seemed the whole internet (or at least all of Twitter) was speculating about what sort of curse would be triggered when we tried to see what lay within.

And aside from the disturbing people who wanted to taste the 2,000 year old mummy goo found inside the sarcophagus, there's no other sign of an apocalyptic curse. Unless we count climate change, which is certainly looking very apocalyptic but was already happening (is there such thing as a pre-emptive curse?).

WHAT HAPPENED: The president is taking his two-week summer vacation to Martha's Vineyard, the island off the coast of Massachusetts, amid a chaotic situation in the Middle East. As tensions flare in Iraq - and uncertainty looms in Gaza and Ukraine - President Obama could not have chosen a more controversial time for his island getaway.

Then White House Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest defended the president's spontaneous holiday, telling reporters, "The fact of the matter is what the president is doing this weekend in Florida is essentially what the president would be doing if he stayed back at the White House."

Another recent distortion is to give her a witch's cap, but she was a casalinga (housewife) not a strega (witch). Many renditions of her are of an ugly old woman with a kerchief, hooked knotty nose with a wart, and patchworked dress. She should be remembered as a poor old woman whose broom is her curse, the reason she missed out on the chance to kneel before the baby Jesus.

After a string of sunny seasons gripped by controversy, crises and plummeting popularity, the summer of 2015 has been among the most productive stretches of Obama's presidency. Late June victories in the Supreme Court on health care and gay marriage, along with a win for his trade agenda on Capitol Hill, were followed by the landmark Iran nuclear deal in July and the raising of the U.S. flag over a new embassy in Cuba in August.

And yet to the president, one of his summer's biggest successes may simply be making it through his annual vacation on the tony Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard largely uninterrupted. While his summer troubles have often trailed him on previous vacations, he closed out this year's trip Sunday without any statements to the press or public appearances, beyond a few glimpses of him on the golf course and biking with his family.

Seeking to bolster his legacy abroad, Obama will also be pushing for a global climate treaty and finalization of a free trade agreement with Asia-Pacific nations. His string of summer successes began with Congress agreeing to a fast-track approval process for the trade pact when negotiations are complete.

For Obama, now deep in his second term, a busy, high-stakes agenda sure beats the alternative. His presidency appeared to be quickly slipping into lame-duck territory last year, but began to rebound after Democrats' defeats in the midterm election and picked up momentum this summer.

Summer has previously been Obama's cruelest season: the hostile health care town halls in 2009, the debt ceiling crisis in 2011, the president's waffling on Syria's chemical weapons use in 2013. Last summer was consumed by the swift rise of the Islamic State and the group's gruesome beheading of Americans, as well as tensions in Ferguson, Missouri, after a white police officer fatally shot an 18-year-old black man.

Free this year from an all-consuming crisis, the president spent most of the two-week summer vacation on the golf course, at the beach and dining out with his family. He also attended a party on the island thrown by Democratic power broker Vernon Jordan, who also hosted an even last year where Obama was spotted on the dance floor.

First, an acknowledgment: not all internships are bad. A good number are properly paid and offer invaluable experience. Many lead to future jobs within the company. They can be a highly rewarding use of summer holidays.

School holidays are being hit by Britain's "summer weather curse" with 10 days of washouts, disappointing temperatures and blustery winds ahead - after the hottest start to summer for 41 years evaporated.

Following her mother's death, which has left her orphaned, Tohru began living with Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo Sohma after accidentally setting up a tent on their property, and later being hired as their landlady. She later learns that thirteen members of the Sohma family are cursed, as they turn into animals of the Chinese Zodiac if they are embraced by anyone of the opposite sex or when their bodies come under a great deal of stress. As the series progresses, Tohru meets and befriends the rest of the zodiac and the family's mysterious head, Akito Sohma, and resolves to break the curse that burdens them. Only later does she admit that she wants to free Kyo most of all.

That same morning, Kyo Sohma appears and begins to pick a fight against Yuki. Tohru tries to stop him and she accidentally hugs him, which causes him to turn into a cat. She also bumps into Yuki and Shigure, causing them to turn into a rat and a dog respectively. This is how Tohru learns of the Sohma family curse, where thirteen members of the house are possessed by the spirits of the Chinese Zodiac and are transformed into their animal if hugged by someone of the opposite sex.[25]

When people cursed by the Zodiac are born, they are born two months prematurely. When Momiji was born two months early, his mother was very worried, and as soon as she held him, he turned into a rabbit. Following this event, she rejected Momiji with her entire body, and her mind went absolutely and completely splintered. She was unable to smile, would snap whenever she saw him, and even referred to him as "that thing".

During summer vacation, Momiji invites the majority of the Cursed Sohmas and Tohru to a vacation at the Sohma's summer house. With Tohru and the Sohmas, Momiji has a fun time at the beach, and he and Tohru scavenge for beetles along with Hiro and Kisa as well.[16] When Akito arrives at the beach, having been invited by Shigure, Momiji and the other Zodiacs are summoned (excluding Kyo) by her. Momiji doesn't seem to be bothered by it since he is aware that Akito dislikes him, but he is worried about Tohru being all alone and tries to make up for it by spending as much time with her as possible.[17]

After summer vacation, Momiji's younger sister, Momo, grows suspicious of his resemblance to their mother ever since they first met at their father's office building. His father immediately pulls him out of violin lessons, because Momo is going to the same teacher and she is becoming curious about him. When Tohru tries to find Kureno Sohma in the Sohma estate, she catches Momo sneaking into the Sohma grounds to watch Momiji play his violin. Tohru talks to her, and Momo reveals that she has been watching him from afar for a long time. She wants Momiji to act as her "big brother" and asks Tohru to tell Momiji that, and Tohru promises she will. When Tohru tells Momiji what happened, it brings him to tears because he is very happy that Momo thinks that way about him.[9]

At some point, Momiji's curse is broken.[19] When Akito realizes that his curse is broken, she begs him to stay. However, Momiji coldly tells her to go home and that he will come back the next day. At school, Haru, Yuki, and Kyo talks to Tohru about how they recognize that there is something 'different' about Momiji even though he was acting as his usual self. Momiji watches over them from a distance and sees how clearly Tohru is in love with Kyo, and naturally, Momiji feels pain that the person he loves is in love with someone else. When Kyo later finds him, Momiji tells him that his curse was broken, but that Tohru would be happier if Kyo's curse was broken. 2ff7e9595c
